Rosnay Organic
Baroque Music paired with Organic Wine
It is interesting to ponder the similarity between the aesthetics and philosophy of Baroque music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and organic farming, in particular organic wine. Both reflect the beauty, cycles, balance and harmony of the natural order. Organic farming focuses on working in harmony with natural ecosystems, using natural processes to promote harmony and balance in soil, plants, insects and animals. For us, the harmonious balance and melodic structures of Baroque music also fosters in us a deep connection to the natural world, especially when using natural instruments and the human voice.
For this reason Bach Akademie Australia has chosen Rosnay Organic Wines as its official Wine Partner.
Rosnay is an organic farming family business created by Richard Statham, his wife Florence, and their son Sam, in the late 1990s, at Canowindra, in the NSW Central West. The Rosnay vineyards, olives and fig orchards have been certified organic since 1998 and the Statham family was awarded the inaugural NSW Organic Pioneers Award from the NSW Department of Primary Industries in 2012.
Rosnay founder Richard Statham is a long-time supporter of fine music. Like Bach Akademie Australia, his aim is also to enrich and enhance the musical life of Australia, starting with his own town, Canowindra. His support began in 2002 with concerts by Sydney Conservatorium of Music students with pianist David Miller. Richard took this to the next level when he started Canowindra Baroquefest, with which many Bach Akademie Australia patrons would be familiar, nearly 10 years ago. Bach Akademie Australia was the 2023 Festival Featured Ensemble and performed at the winery then, and we look forward to returning in future years.
Richard's wife Florence Statham captured the connection of Rosnay with fine music on a wine label she painted for the Rosnay Semillon, first bottled in 2004, with the last vintage in 2016 when those vines were replaced with Vermentino. It features cellist Trish Dean, who played several times at Rosnay at the time. Today her grandchildren create many of the wine labels and local artists exhibit in the Rosnay Cellar Door.
Above all, the wines are excellent examples of the varieties and the NSW Central Ranges. They are hand crafted by Richard and Florence's son Sam in small batches using traditional, natural winemaking methods including wild yeast fermentation and no sulfite additions. Like Baroque music, the wines are textural and not polished, rounded and not angular, with a harmonious balance in each.
Bach Akademie Australia will feature Rosnay Organic Wines at events and select concerts. Our patrons and supporters may mention Bach Akademie Australia when purchasing from the winery for special offers and free tasting at the Rosnay Cellar Door.
