Focusing on this pivotal time of year, Bach’s Magnificat reflects the universal themes of our human existence that we all feel as the year comes to a close. None so far have bettered Bach’s inspired setting of the Latin text reminding us of the Christmas message. We can find greatness in the lowliest of us, mercy for all generations, as well as generosity and justice for the poor and less fortunate. The joy of the Christmas celebration when families and friends come together, combined with the hope, expectation and renewal of the coming new year are truly encapsulated in this remarkable work. To provide a joyous start to this Christmas season, we begin with Bach’s Cantata ‘O ewiges Feuer’ BWV 34, then crown the year and ring in the Christmas season with his Magnificat.
